Freeway Ricky Ross Talks Crips And Bloods, Rapper Rick Ross

Freeway Ricky Ross Talks Crips And Bloods, Rapper Rick Ross

The former drug kingpin tells the Wake Up Show that Los Angeles gangs were united under the drug trade, and that he still feels disrespected by Rick Ross.
In an in-depth interview with Sway & King Tech's Wake Up Show, Freeway Ricky Ross spoke candidly about his life, including details on his long career as a drug kingpin, the relationship between Los Angeles Crips and Bloods, and of course, his issues with rapper Rick Ross, who he believes stole his name.

The former drug lord claimed that by his incarceration in 1996, $600 million had passed through his hands in some form, and that he'd sometimes make $3 million in one day. He explained that his nonchalant attitude towards the money was sometimes misconstrued as greed.

"Once [the money] starts coming, you're not really doing anything but giving orders," he told the radio show. "I didn't see drugs, I didn't see money. All I did was numbers and spend money…You pick up the phone and a guy says, 'Hey man, I need 20 keys.' So you figure okay I'm gonna make $200,000 off of that. [So I'd say to someone else], 'Hey kid, go deliver these 20 keys to him.'"

He made clear that he takes full responsibility for his actions, but does not agree with the idea that his involvement in drug trafficking led to violence in his neighborhood. "[The courts] wanted to relate the drugs to the violence but that wasn't the case. When we started selling drugs it was the first time you could see a Crip on a Blood's block. And they're getting along because they're working. They're trying to get money. And when you trying to get money you don't want no violence. You don't want the killing and the police coming around because that interrupts your cash flow."

He also spoke to host King Tech about his disgruntlement with Miami rapper Rick Ross, although he admits that the self-proclaimed Teflon Don made savvy business decisions by using his name.

"As a business man it was a smart move. He caught a name that was already hot in the streets and somebody he thought was gone and buried…He probably thought that I was never gonna get out and he was banking that I would never get out and he snatched the name. And maybe it was out of respect but at the same time he hasn't shown respect right now and today…when you wearin' another man's name are you really a man or are you living in a mask?"

He added, "I want my name back…Somewhere I heard him say that I should be happy that he used my name…How can I be happy when you took my car, and you're driving around in my car and I'm walking?"

Eminem & Royce Da 5'9 Reveal "Hell: The Sequel" EP, Coming June 14

UPDATE: Marshall and Nickel Nine are taking listeners to the underworld on "Hell: The Sequel," featuring production from Havoc, DJ Khalil and Mr. Porter.
It has been announced that Detroit, Michigan emcees Eminem and Royce Da 5'9 will revive their late '90s duo Bad Meets Evil. RapRadar.com has reported that Em and one of his longtime friends and Shady Records artist (by way of Slaughterhouse) Royce are planning an EP to release on June 14.
The group, which had been rumored to be working on a similar project over 12 years ago, has reunited recently, and begun working on songs such as "Echo" and "Writer's Block" .
Eminem said the following in a released statement, "Royce and I started hanging out again and inevitably that led us back into the studio. At first we were just seeing where it went without any real goal in mind, but the songs started to come together crazy, so here we are."
Production will be reportedly handled by Havoc of Mobb Deep, Mr. Porter, Bangladesh and DJ Khalil.

Wale Plans To Release Two Albums In Either 2011 Or 2012

Wale Plans To Release Two Albums In Either 2011 Or 2012

The Maybach Music Group rapper reveals he's recorded enough material to put out several projects.
With his Maybach Music Group compilation Self Made Vol. 1 on the way, Wale doesn’t plan on chillin’. The Washington D.C. native has revealed that he has recorded enough material for his sophomore album and a follow-up, with hopes of dropping the LPs either this year or in 2012.
“It’s done. I mean, I’m just making songs,” he told MTV News. “I told Warner Bros. I’m not opposed to droppin’ two albums in 2011 or two in 2012. [...] If they allow me to and they ready for it, I’ll do it.”
The former Interscope Records signee explained that his new releases will showcase his growth since the release of his debut album Attention Deficit. “It's a lot of drive, it's a lot of hunger, it's a lot of the things that I wasn't good at explaining the first time around," he continued. "The messages are getting' across a lot cleaner, so I'm very, very proud of the music I've been putting out for this new project.”
As one of the flagship artists on Rick Ross’ MMG, Wale joins Pill, Meek Mill and Rozay on the group’s first release Self Made, whose release was bumped up a day to May 23rd.

Soulja Boy and Drake to Release a Collaboration

Soulja Boy and Drake to Release a Collaboration

Soulja Boy reveals that he and Drake have been cooking up a track together.
Over the years, Soulja Boy has collaborated with a number of A-list artists, including Gucci Mane, Lil B and Snoop Dogg. Now, the "Crank That" rapper reveals that he and one of Young Money's flagship artists Drake may be hitting the studio in the near future.
According to Rap-Up.com, Soulja Boy explained that he and Drizzy are cooking up a song together. He said that the collab came out of a call that Drake had put into the Atlanta rapper to congratulate him on his recent Juice mixtape.
“Me and Drake got something coming - crazy,” Soulja Boy said. “Drake called me and was like, ‘Man, I like the Juice mixtape. I like the ‘Zan with That Lean’ too. He named four songs off the mixtape that he really liked."
Soulja Boy added that Drake and he have already made plans to link up in the ATL and hit the studio together for an entire week.
"He said he’s coming to Atlanta and gon’ kick it with me,” he added. “We gonna go in the studio for a whole week. He’s working on his new album too, so you already know what time it is.”
This isn't the first time the two have worked together. Drake and Soulja Boy performed Soulja Boy's hit single "Pretty Boy Swag" at a concert last year in Los Angeles.

Jay Z and Kanye Relocate to NYC to finish "Watch The Throne"

Jay-Z & Kanye West Relocate To NYC For
The dynamic duo was reportedly hanging with Kid CuDi while recording for the project.
After taking Paris by storm to record for their upcoming collaboration LP Watch The Throne, Jay-Z and Kanye West are back in the Big Apple. The longtime associates have reportedly relocated their studio headquarters from New York City's Mercer Hotel to the Tribeca Grand Hotel, recording "tons of tracks" for the highly anticipated album.
According to NY Post's Page Six, Jigga and Yeezy were supposedly recording new tunes from late Wednesday night through Thursday morning in the makeshift studio. Eyewitnesses claim that Kid CuDi was in attendance, as well as Universal executive Barry Weiss and label staff. The pair also remained entirely focused on the music, with Beyonce nowhere in sight and no liquor on the premises.

10 Things Learned from Reading "Dirty South" By Ben Westhoff

10 Things We Learned Reading

From DJ Khaled being in the room when Lil Wayne met Birdman in '93 to Master P's rapping wife to 2 Live Crew's Christian Rap beginnings to the Rap-A-Lot & Death Row connection, we share some trivia.
Southern Hip Hop is a dominating force in the genre. Covering regional dialects, influences and sounds in areas such as Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Memphis and New Orleans, it's a lot to grasp. Highly-respected author Ben Westhoff breaks it all down in just-released book Dirty South: Outkast, Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy, and the Southern Rappers Who Reinvented Hip-Hop. Published on the Chicago Review Press, the easy-to-read book is written for us (and others) by one of us: the Hip Hop community.
Although the work chronicles more recent movements such as Soulja Boy, Grand Hustle and T-Pain, one of its greatest offerings is covering lesser-known or less popular facts about movements such as Luke Campbell and 2 Live Crew, J. Prince's Rap-A-Lot Records and even 8Ball & MJG.
1. 2 Live Crew began making records about God. Pre-Luke-era 2 Live Crew found the California trio of Fresh Kid Ice, Amazing V. and Mr. Mixx making their 1984 Macola Records single "The Revelation," which was about Heaven and Hell. Westhoff even revisited the 12-inch on the same label that birthed N.W.A. and others with the quoted verse from Amazing V., "Now your pocket is full, but can't you see / That your soul will burn in hell for eternity?"
2. The ties between Rap-A-Lot Records and Death Row Records. For years, it's been widely known that Death Row's co-founder Marion "Suge" Knight and Rap-A-Lot's James "J." Prince are friends who have supported each others' acts in tougher times. However, Dirty South points out why Big Mike and Mr. 3-2 were working with Snoop Doggy Dogg and Warren G in 1991 and 1992, before Mike filled in for Willie D in the Geto Boys. The ties then reportedly had to do with Michael "Harry O" Harris and Lydia Harris, who both claim to have provided seed money to the two legendary and controversial Gangsta Rap labels. When the Harris couple went to help roll out Death Row, they called on The Convicts to get their big break, and thus Big Mike had a chance to be a Death Row inmate. Had Willie D not skipped from Scarface and Bushwick, who knows how history would have been different...
3. DJ Screw's store today. Late Houston, Texas deejay/production pioneer's store, Screwed Up Records & Tapes. Ben Westhoff visits the Rap landmark and describes it to look as essentially a check-cashing outfit, with hundreds of covers of various Screw tapes on the wall, and the CDs housed behind a locked door. The 13 year-old operation is run today by Screw's cousin.
4. Just how different Andre 3000 and Big Boi are. The book reveals interesting minutia that includes the fact that the two Outkast emcees travel on separate tour buses, frequently work from separate home studios, and that Andre 3000's whereabouts are often unknown to everybody, including his partner.
5. Three early Cash Money Records artists, pre-Juvenile, have all been murdered since leaving the label. The list includes Kilo-G, Pimp Daddy and Yella Boy. Even Westhoff writes that very little is known or documented about the artists or deaths.
6. Master P's wife and Lil Romeo's mom was a rapper. Sonjya C. Miller (a/k/a Sonjya C) was just one of the many faces of the 1990s No Limit Records roster. Downplayed in the media, this rapper released a 1993 E-A-Ski & CMT-produced album, Married To The Mob, as well as was a prominent member of TRU throughout much of the decade. Her other son Vallentino has also pursued rapping, with the Rich Boyz.
7. Lil Jon was, at one time, a Rastafarian. The book says that in his early twenties, deeply influenced by British Reggae band Steel Pulse, the King of Crunk started growing the dreads we now know him for, and stopped eating meat.
8. DJ Drama alleges that two of his personal vehicles, a BMW 645 and a promotional van, have never been returned to him after the 2007 Federal raid launched by the RIAA.
9. Westhoff credits Cher's 2007 hit "Do You Believe" as the first true Auto-Tune hit. In his chapter about T-Pain, Akon and DJ Khaled, the author notes how a former Exxon executive's invention of pitch correction made a smash hit for the '70s star, which trickled its way into urban music, later giving us years of 808's & Heartbreak.
10. DJ Khaled was present the day that Lil Wayne met Cash Money Records founders Birdman and Ronald "Slim" Williams. The chance meeting reportedly happened circa 1993 in Odyssey Records, a retail New Orleans music store, where the aggressive-yelling Khaled was working during an autograph signing where Wayne freestyled. Fifteen years later, the four men started getting (major) money together.

Young Chris Deflects Speculation That Jay-Z Stole His Rhyme Pattern

Young Chris Deflects Speculation That Jay-Z Stole His Rhyme Pattern

The former Roc-A-Fella artist says Jay-Z never took his style, despite criticism that Jay's flow uncannily resembles his.
When a rapper steals lyrics from a peer, to some it epitomizes one of music's highest transgressions. After Consequence accused labelmate Pusha T of plagiarism, fans flocked to his side, many denouncing Pusha for blatantly stealing lyrics. Of course, it was later revealed that Cons' accusations were highly exaggerated and far-fetched, but still highlighted the disdain Hip Hop listeners have for stealing lyrics.

Plagiarism is one thing, but swagger-jacking is another. On Tuesday, former Roc-A-Fella artist Young Chris commented - not for the first time - on speculation that Jay-Z stole not his lyrics, but his flow.

"Yeah I hear [speculation]," he told Meet Tha Dealer. "I don't really indulge in it but I hear it though. We were all around each other [in the studio] so that shit rubs off on each other. We took from everybody. Everybody took from each other. I always say steel sharpens steel and that's what I mean [and] that's what defines that."

A year ago, State Property member Peedi Crakk boldly commented on the similarities between Jay and Chris' rhyme pattern.

"I want to clarify that [Jay] doesn't steal anyone's songs," Peedi said. "He steals swag, ideas, concepts… Jay doesn't just straight up jack you for a song, he's smooth with it. You ever listen to Young Chris rap and then go back and listen to Jay? You almost start to scratch your head. The old Jay-Z never rapped like that… Jay has no swag of his own."

However, Young Chris explained that people's feeling about this controversy are arbitrary and shift back and forth.

"I don't really get into that. [Jay's] my man. People say I took his shit. A few weeks back they was saying I sound like Jay-Z, but years down the line they're like, 'Oh hold on, maybe [Jay-Z] took his shit!'"

Young Chris also speaks on his feelings about the Jay-Z and Nas beef.

Ice-T, Soulja Boy Resume Beef Over 'Juice' Remake

Ice-T, Soulja Boy Resume Beef Over 'Juice' Remake

It looks like Ice-T v. Soulja Boy ain't over yet, as the west coast legend takes offense to Soulja staring in the 'Juice' remake.
It looks like Ice-T and his one-time foe Soulja Boy are back at it with their beef. Now, however, the two artists are sharing words withone another with Soulja Boy's upcoming role in the remake of the Ernest R. Dickerson film Juice.
During an interview with Shade 45 last week, Ice-T responded to the news that Soulja Boy would be starring in the role of Bishop, which was famously originated by Tupac Shakur. Although Ice didn't specifically call the "Crank Dat" rapper out for signing to the role, he did say that the fact the film is being remade is promblematic.
"What?” he said. “But that’s Pac… At some point, somebody gotta stop it. I came out. I made some statements. Man, I don’t know. Do you, dude, do you. If the masses accept it, it shows you the state we’re in… Come on man, you think I’d try to remake Pac’s movie? Good luck though, I'm not a hater

Soulja Boy responded to Ice-T the same day on Twitter, joking that someone "get this guy a hairline."

Lil' Kim Fires Shots At Nicki Minaj On Twitter

Lil' Kim Fires Shots At Nicki Minaj On Twitter

The Queen Bee uses Twitter to inflict venom on her arch nemesis.
The beef between Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Kim rages on. After the Harajuku Barbie fired thinly veiled potshots at the Queen Bee in her verse on the remix to Britney Spears’ “Til' The World Ends,”  Biggie’s protégé has taken the beef to Twitter.
Last night, Kimmy Blanco tweeted sideways about the Young Money rapstress, claiming that she would never name her dog after her. “I would never name her ‘Shitty Garbaj’!!! My dog is way prettier than that bitch!!!” she wrote. “What type of coward lame ass bitch tweets some shit and then deletes it. REAL bitches stand by what they say BOZO...”
She raged on in subsequent messages. “You cheap stocking cap glued $10 bag hair wig wearing bitch. Get a lace front!!! FYI Indian hair don’t come in green BITCH...,” she continued. “You free lunch eating bitch...WHAT!!! [...] Bitch I see you crawling!!! I got my can of RAID. Come get it!!! #TwitterRoach !!!!”
Kim is currently promoting her latest mixtape release Black Friday, while Nicki is gearing up for her upcoming summer tour with Britney Spears.

Jay-Z Talks "Watch The Throne" Delays, Illuminati Rumors

Jay-Z Talks
In an interview with Delta Sky magazine, Jay-Z explains the creative delays between himself and Kanye, and why people think he's in some secret society.
Kanye West and Jay-Z announced back in January that they would release their collaborative Watch The Throne album within the month. Over four months later, the duo is still rumored to be putting the finishing touches on the project. In a recent interview with Delta Sky magazine, Jay gave a brief explanation for some of the delays.

“Before success, there weren’t interviews or photo shoots,” Jay recounted. “Now it’s a big thing to get in the studio. It’s like a process just to get there. And once I'm there, I have to dial into an emotion.”

Jay added that at times, it’s been hard for Kanye West to finish, saying that his protégé-turned-peer is “in an extraordinarily creative place,” which is making it difficult for him to focus.

When Watch The Throne finally does land on shelves, Jay-Z and Kanye detractors may begin another round of Illuminati rumors. But Jay dismissed such accusations, and he had his own line of reasoning for why people think he may be in some mythical secret society.

“I just think people can’t handle when somebody is successful,” Jay explained. “Something has gotta be wrong; you gotta be down with some higher power. And I guess when someone else is successful; it makes you feel like maybe you’re a failure. So it can't be you, it has to be some other force.”
